The u20's World Cup

Who all stayed up to watch Scotland getting a footballing lesson then?

I thought Japan were simply streets ahead of Scotland on all levels.

Pace, touch, control, ability and technique........we couldn't match them in any area.

The number 7 for Japan (who scored the second was fabulous)

Here's a few clips of him

Nakata, the number 8, was good too.

From a Scottish side of things, only Stephen Fletcher and Ross Campbell (both of Hibs) got passmarks for me. We just don't seem capable of controlling a ball and moving to find space.
Admittedly the Japanese are a very good team and strongly quoted at this level in World football but we can't even look like showing the ability to do the basics.

We can't beat a man either. We're just not quick enough.

From what I can gather, Scotland have stuck with the exact same squad that took part (and did so well) in the Euro Championships last summer. That's possibly a fair enough point but considering how much a player, at that age, can develop or go backwards I can't help but feel their wasn't a couple of better options left at home.

Certainly from the Rangers boys I've seen at that level, Elmslie and Shinnie were better than anything on display last night. Perhaps the step up in level is too much though. Alan Lowing plays in the same team as them and he was struggling badly too. Admittedly he's a right back and shouldn't have played at left back. The decision to put Lee Wallace into midfield without a recognised left back to replace him was strange.

We can only hope that we fair better in the next two games against Nigeria and Costa Rica.

Most, if not all of the midfield has changed since the under 19's thing last year (through injury), and that's made the difference in my opinion.

Scotland were terrible last night. I'd like to see how everone else gets on against japan right enough, they might just be the best team there, but Scotland will have to improve alot in the next couple of games.

Who's all missing from last year?

I recognised pretty much all the names in the starting line up and even the subs that came on. I just assumed from that I knew them from last summer.

Here's the line up for the final last year against Spain

Fletcher played last night but was missing from that team (I vaguely remember him being suspended or injured as he'd scored alot of goals in the rest of the competition)

McGlinchey was missing last night and he seems to have had a big influence last summer...

I'm sure Grant and Ferry from Celtic, and Cameron from United made up the main part of the midfield.. all of which are injured just now.
Bob

Never saw it from start to finish but saw enough to realise that we were second best in all departments as you say.

Anyone got the rest of the fixture dates / times and channels? The nigerian game is the middle of the night eh?

This is a fantastic website for those sort of questions Bob....

The Hibs goalies by the way.

Really.

Why are they so bad ?

They make Stan look like Buffon.

Shhhhteady now!

Aye, they've had their fair share of the Maxwell's / Douglas' in the last couple of years eh?

You'd be forgiven for letting the boy carry on in goals for the next game given he's been the number one for ages if he'd only make one mistake but the two last night were just too much.

The defender certainly put him under pressure for the first goal but he still should have showed more composure.

The second was just a shambles.

Both together should see him 'drapped'
